Pomerium

The sacred boundary around each recognized town/city, formally designated by placement of special cippi stones.  Many acts are forbidden within the pomerium of a population center, such as anyone other than a patrician taking the life of a citizen.  Violating a pomerium by, for example, marching troops past one can be viewed as an act of war.
